The Black Girls Don’t Get Love Film Training Program

The coming of age genre is severely lacking in Black female representation. Black Girls Don’t Get Love is going to be the one to change that by empowering the next generation of BIPOC storytellers in Central New York.

The Black Girls Don’t Get Love Film Training Program would not have been possible without our sponsors

This project is made possible in part with funds from the City of Syracuse Arts & Culture Recovery Fund Program, a regrant program of the City of Syracuse and administered by CNY Arts.

Additionally, this project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.

Vision for the Black Girls Don’t Get Love Film Training Program

The Black Girls Don't Get Love Film Training Program is an opportunity for girls of color ages 13-25*** to experience a Hollywood-standard film production process right here in Central New York. Black Girls Don’t Get Love Trainees will get hands on experience in the pre-production, production, & post-production process as our team of film professionals work to train our girls and create a short film to engage our community around the Black Girls Don't Get Love story. Trainees who are selected to participate in the Film Training Program will select an industry track they are most interested in pursuing professionally.

The workshop offerings Trainees can choose from include producing, directing, acting, cinematography, post-production, and screenwriting. As part of the program, selected Trainees will complete assignments related to their tracks, and attend workshops with industry professionals to learn fundamental skills for their desired career path. In addition to the education and networking opportunities, Black Girls Don’t Get Love Trainees who participate in the Film Training Program will earn an IMDB film credit on the short film, and have access to media-specific college and career prep resources, so they can continue to develop their skills after completing the Film Training Program.

To ensure we are setting our Trainees up for future success, we are also requiring all Film Training Program participants to make a short work sample cataloguing their learning experience in the program. This work sample will be used to help trainees apply for future opportunities outside of Black Girls Don’t Get Love.

***PLEASE NOTE: While girls of color ages 13-25 are our target audience, we welcome applications from non-BIPOC identifying girls, because we want our learning opportunities to foster a space for our allies to do this work alongside us. Additionally, we will consider passionate applicants who are outside of the 13-25 age range if they are serious about being in the program and able to commit to the rigor of the training.

REMOVING BARRIERS OF TRADITIONAL FILM INCUBATORS

Traditionally, to be accepted into a high-level film incubator such as the Black Girls Don’t Get Love Film Training Program, participants would need to have extensive work samples and industry connections to simply be considered for participation. Considering that our Film Training Program is based out of one of the top poorest cities in the country, many aspiring female filmmakers of color in the CNY area would simply not have access to a Hollywood-standard film set until later in their media careers. It is also likely that this access would require aspiring female filmmakers of color to be in major cities such as New York or Los Angeles. Black Girls Don’t Get Love is removing this barrier by bringing Hollywood to Central New York and creating a space specifically for girls of color to gain industry-standard experience at the start of their careers. As such, the Black Girls Don’t Get Love Film Training Program will boast an accessible, but rigorous selection process to ensure the best candidates are selected for the program.
