The Black Girls Don’t Get Love Prom
A formal event designed to celebrate girls of color. With over $8,000 in sponsorships, and in-kind prom dress donations, we ensured there would not be a financial barrier to girls of color who wanted to attend the Black Girls Don’t Get Love Prom on Saturday, July 23, 2022.
On Saturday, July 23, 2022, our team hosted the Black Girls Don’t Get Love Prom, a formal event specifically designed to celebrate and acknowledge girls of color in the Central New York area. The Prom was a night to remember. Upon arrival at the event, the girls walked down the pink carpet and were greeted with roses and tiaras as they entered the ballroom.
The night consisted of a DJ, live music, catered meal, 360-degree photo booth, raffles, dancing, and more. It was a night to remember for girls of color, where they felt special, not because of who asked them to the event, but because of who they are. With over $8,000 in sponsorships and in-kind prom dress donations from local partners, we were able to ensure that cost would not be a barrier to girls who wanted to attend the event.
Leading up to the Black Girls Don't Get Love Prom, on Monday, July 11, 2022 the Black Girls Don’t Get Love team hosted a reading of the Black Girls Don’t Get Love book, so the story and intention behind the Prom would be understood. At the reading, in partnership with Ninety-Two, the Black Girls Don’t Get Love team also distributed prom dresses to the girls to ensure cost would not be a barrier to attending the event. On Thursday, July 14, 2022, Prom attendees had a final chance to get a free dress at Becca’s Closet in Liverpool.
